Fifty Seconds

.
We tend to think that meditation is all about getting our brain quiet, becoming still. And it is.
.
But that’s not the whole story.
.
This morning, for example, I did my usual thirty minute meditation.
.
Twenty nine minutes and ten seconds of that was spent getting lost in thoughts and distracted by feelings… going all over the place mentally and emotionally.
.
Meditation isn’t all about being quiet, it’s about coming back. Each time we notice we’ve gone off somewhere, we gently come back to ourselves. We don’t berate ourselves, we don’t feel guilt or shame, or that we’re doing it ‘wrong’. We simply come back. As many times as it takes.
.
And after that twenty nine minutes and ten seconds?
.
I experienced fifty seconds of deep peace and stillness. It felt more valuable than the whole of the rest of the meditation.
.
And yet it was the rest of the meditation—the ‘difficult’ part—that made those fifty seconds possible.
