Comfortably Numb

.
Why do we refuse to feel? And when did it start?
.
As children we had those waves of emotion. Even as a teen. Though as a teen it took something special to create the feeling… that first touch of a romantic interest, that first kiss… Those swellings of energy pulsing and rushing through the body. The ebb and flow.
.
But as we gain more experience, as we suffer more hurt and more pain, more rejection, we push it all away… we push it down… we put a lid on it. And, it turns out, that’s the worst thing we could ever do to ourselves.
.
Common wisdom says that feelings have no place in the ‘grown-up’ world; they have no place in a modern society. Stiff upper lip. Man-up and get on with it. Keep calm and carry on.
.
We learn to stop showing our feelings. And then, if we have learnt that skill well enough, we learn to stop feeling our feelings. Numbness. Emptiness. Nothing.
.
You see, the problem is that when we numb the pain, we also numb the joy.
.
We have a choice available to us…
.
Feel all of it, or feel none of it.
.
What will you choose?
.
